Exception: 

Solution:

This error may occur when the Test Controller and Agents runs out disk space. Try to clean up the disk to gain free space or add extra space to the drive.

How to build Visual Studio 2012 later versions solution in TFS 2012 build environment?

Explanation:

You can build the Visual Studio 2012 later versions in TFS 2012 build environment by configurating the 'ToolPath' property in the TFS 2012 build xaml file.

Solution:

Open the TFS 2012 build xaml file with the same Visual Studio version (i.e VS 2012) to edit the 'ToolPath' property as below and save the xaml to build.

Visual Studio 2012 ToolPath

On 32-bit machines : C:\Program Files\MSBuild\12.0\bin
On 64-bit machines : C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\12.0\bin

Visual Studio 2015 ToolPath
On 32-bit machines : C:\Program Files\MSBuild\14.0\bin
On 64-bit machines : C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\14.0\bin

The updated arguments of a build process template not getting refreshed in the process section of a build definition

Workaround:

  • Delete the registered build process template in the collection database

          use <Collection database>;
          delete from tbl_BuildProcessTemplate where ProcessTemplateID = 'updated Process Template ID';

  • Create the build definition again

"Application detected an unexpected fault" when opening the lab center tab in mtm

Exception: 

 

Explanation:

This exception may appear when the lab environments exist with no lab systems.

Workaround:

  • Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
  • Connect to the TFS collection database where your team project exist. 
  • Run the following SQL query to identify the lab environments with no lab systems:

Select le.LabEnvironmentId from LabEnvironment le where le.PartitionId = 1 And NOT EXISTS (Select * From LabSystem ls where ls.LabEnvironmentId = le.LabEnvironmentId AND ls.PartitionId = 1)

  • Note the Id's of the lab environment with no lab systems.
  • Remove all lab environments with no lab systems, by using the following SQL command for each lab environment IDs:

Exec DeleteLabEnvironment @PartitionId = 1, @labEnvironmentId = <Lab Environment ID>, @namespaceGuid = N'9E4894C3-FF9A-4EAC-8A85-CE11CAFDC6F1', @deleteTestMachines = 1, @pendingOperationId = Null

"User Story" or "Product Backlog Item" or "Bug" work item template take long time to save when added to "Requirement" category in TFS 2012

Explanation:
You may experience "User Story" (MSF Agile template) or "Product Backlog Item" (Scrum template) or "Bug" (Scrum template) work item templates take long time to save when added to "Requirement" category in TFS 2012. These work items save in no time when removed out of "Requirement" category.

Solution:

Explanation:

The above warning message is reproducible when the users have duplicate display names in Tfs_Configuration’s identity table.

Workaround:

Change the display name in TFS profile.

1. Navigate to Web Access and load a Team Project that has the Display Name you want to change.

2. Navigate to the Administration page by selecting Administer Settings option on the top right hand corner of the Web Access page.

3. Click on the drop down arrow next to your name

4. Select "USER PROFILE"

5. Click Edit to modify your Display Name.

6. Click "Save changes" button.

Area or Iteration path created in the project is not reflected in the TFS cube/SSAS

Explanation: 

TFS cube gets refreshed 2 hours once. You should have at least  one work item assigned to the specific area or iteration path to get reflected in the cube or available in the report.

Frequently getting connection error message in the build notifications

Error Message:

"Connection to the Team Foundation server http://servername:8080/tfs/defaultcollection has been restored." 

Solution:

  • Open build notifications options window
  • Deselect the build definitions that have been deleted
  • Close the options window
  • Open build notifications options window again
  • Make sure that the deselected build definitions are disappeared from the list of build definition in build notification tool.

Build notification tool does not remove the deleted build definition automatically.

How to update TFS workspace after computer name changes?

Explanation:

You will not be able to work on your existing workspace, if your computer name is changed. You may get error messages while you try accessing the source repository.

Solution:

1. Open Visual Studio command console and execute the below command

tf workspaces /updateComputerName:<OldComputerName> /s:<ServerName>

2. Install Team Foundation Sidekicks.

  • Open the workspace Sidekick
  • click Search
  • Select your workspace from the list.
  • Click the blue computer icon to Update Workspace Computer Name

Exception:

There was a problem importing the global list: TF26204: The account you entered is not recognized.

 

Explanation:

You will get the above exception while trying to import a global list file with the items in the list contain backslash

Workaround:

Replace the backslash with forwardslash and import the global list file
